Introducing Myself

Richard Yang is a clarinetist pursuing a Bachelor's in Music Education at Western University with interests in conducting and wind band music. While he is mainly a clarinetist now, he still enjoys maintaining his proficiency on the piano while also occasionally exploring the world of composing, arranging, and transcribing too. Outside of music, Richard especially enjoys working on theatre productions, no matter the capacity. His work has ranged from stagehand to followspot operator, and recently, he was the stage manager of a university production of Cabaret. Richard particularly enjoys programming and designing lights, often in the ETC Eos environment.

Memorable Experiences

This was the first concert with the Toronto Youth Wind Orchestra from their 2023-24 season. We gave the Canadian premiere of Omar Thomas' Caribana and it was really special to have had the opportunity to work with Omar Thomas himself.

Highlight performances from later in the season include Year of the Dragon (Sparke), Frozen Cathedral (Mackey), El Camino Real (Reed), and Adventures on Earth from E.T. (Williams transcr. Lavender).

This was a special opportunity to perform at Carnegie Hall in New York City. The Pipes & Drums of the #142 St. Andrew's College Highland Cadet Corps stole the show!

I loved doing the lighting programming for this show, and operated the cues myself too. We did it on an ETC Ion console, and worked with a variety of conventional and moving fixtures. Again, the Pipes & Drums rock!
